USS Helena at Pearl Harbor
7 December 1941

Report Introduction

Return to Helena at Pearl Harbor Main Page

One of the reports has two versions.
The original from Fold3 is titled
Report of Japanese Raid on Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941.

The print quality in most pages is hard to read.

Patrick Clancey transcribed this report and it is titled
Brief Report of the Japanese Attack of 7 December 1941.

The War Damage Report contains five pages
and is easy to read with its clear print.

The Preliminary Reports were scanned at
the National Archives at San Francisco in 2014.

The first part, Torpedo and Bomb Damage, contains
21 pages written in narrative form and is easy to read.

There are 18 pages in Personal Accounts with four appendices.

Below is one document from the
Torpedo and Bomb Damage Preliminary Report
showing the probable path of the torpedo
and the location where it hit the Helena.

The schematic diagram of the St Louis ( sister ship of the Helena )
shows locations of the various anti-aircraft guns.

In these reports you will see statements that
the near miss bombs hit off the starboard side of the ship in
the area of these gun mounts and AA in the middle area.

The location of the near misses is most clearly explained in the

Clancey transcription

beginning at the bottom of Page 7 and continuing to the top of Page 8

A very concise description of the attack on the Helena is
in the two pages of the MAILGRAM at the bottom.

The BLUE * concerns near misses.

NOTE: There is a possibility that the near miss that hit the dock
is actually FROM a torpedo.
