ALBERT LAWRENCE LUCCHETTI
1941

 

Al enlisted in the Navy on18 September 1940 and was at
the Naval Training Center at San Diego for two months.

Following graduation, he was assigned to the USS Helena,
arriving on board at Pearl Harbor 29 November 1940.

On 7 December 1941, Al was topside feeding shells into 50 calibre anti aircraft guns.

The Helena departed Pearl Harbor in mid January 1942 and
steamed to Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, California.

Within the main page of the Lucchetti Collection are
two pages from the the Photo Album with men's signatures.

The first page of names in the Photo Album are dated 1 March 1942.
All of these men are from the Helena.


Prior to 7 December 1941 Al had requested transfer into the submarine service.

On 1 April 1942 his request was granted and
he was transferred to the Submarine School at New London, Connecticut.

At the end of April he was on his way back to Pearl Harbor and
was assigned to the Kingfish, SS-234.

This boat was commissioned on 20 May 1942 and was based at Midway.
Its first war patrol took place on 9 September 1942.

Al's next assignment took place on 30 Jan 1943 on the Sunfish SS-281.

At the end of December he was on the USS Drum at Mare Island.

In March 1944 Al was back at Mare Island
awaiting his new boat, USS TREPANG SSN - 412.

His marriage to Arlien Ruth White took place on 3 March 1944.

has signatures of four men dated 26 September 1944.
